The Seven Holy Virtues
The Holy Virtues are a popular way to categorize qualities to strive towards. Each Holy Virtue embodies an infinite number of qualities that share a common motive. All seven are to be practiced, as they lead towards God and promote His work.
Each of the Virtues is the opposite of a Deadly Sin.
Meekness
The scripture says that the meek will inherit the Earth. Anger and hatred only serve to destroy and keep misery alive. Thus by controlling your temper and being meek you follow God's commands and Jesus's example better.
Moderation
One of the things the scripture continually points out is that you're supposed to take things in moderation and never in excess. For example drinking some beer now and then isn't sinful, but drinking until you're rather hammered is a sin. Moderation is the embodiment of this command.
Chastity
Lust is the excess of wanting. Thus Chastity is the control of your desires. People these days have the terms "need" and "want" confused much of the time. They "need" a new plasma TV or they "need" to play some game. The only needs the human body actually has is food, air, water, shelter and love. With the exception of life-saving medicine and life-sustaining machines everything else is a want. Those that are strong with the Virtue of Chastity understand this trivial but very important difference.
Generosity
In the winter when the charities are busy ringing bells in the street they often say "give till it hurts" or something to that affect. Many of the remarks by Jesus were something to this effect. When the rich man asked how to be saved Jesus replied "sell all that you own and distribute to the poor". That rich guy was brokenhearted, as he like many people these days love their possessions more than others. This virtue is about spreading out the bounty God placed on the Earth in contrast to the Sin of Avarice which hoards the bounty for one's self.
Zeal
While Zealots can be rather annoying they are still far better off than those that are apathetic about the world. Sloth is the Sin of uncaring, "it's not my problem" and frankly not giving a damn. The Virtue of Zeal is the opposite of this. Strong devotion to spiritual matters and enthusiasm about worldly matters and what you do is a must in this world. But beware: Zeal can become perverted and turn into the Deadly Sins of Pride and Wrath! Kept in check, Zeal is probably the most powerful and potent of the Virtues.
Charity
When things go wrong, those that Envy are delighted. Those embodying Charity care and sympathize. Combined with Zeal this Virtue heals the sick, aids the wounded and makes life more enjoyable for others. Charity is like a nexus of the Virtues. When this Virtue is present the others join in quickly.
Humility
Under God, all of us are equals. Those with Pride impose a cast system where none exists. Those that embody Humility don't prejudge others as they understand they have no right to do so.
