A 'Fandom' is the large community of fans of a subject, usually a work of fiction. Walking, talking animal characters are often called "Funny Animals" or "Furries". The Furry Fandom, therefore, is the large community of fans of walking, talking animal characters.

The Furry Fandom is somewhat unique in that the fans themselves produce the bulk of the content the fandom enjoys.

Since the Furry Fandom is rather new compared to other fandoms it can be said to be suffering growing pains. The most common example of these growing pains is the portrayal of the fandom as a sexual fetish or perverse nature-themed cult. It is neither; it is a hobby. As such, there are Furries of all religions, races and political backgrounds. Furries can be found all over the world, though the internet is what has brought the fandom together.
