One Lit Candle

One lit candle

If you look around in many churches you will find a candle burning away quietly by itself in some corner. It will probably look like the image shown above and at the bottom of every page on this site; after all that's what the image was drawn to look like.

These are small eternal flames. They reflect the lit lamps mentioned in Matthew 25:1-13. They imply that the watch has not yet ended and that we continue to wait for the Second Coming. They can also reflect the constant care that faith requires: like those virgins, none of us can afford to let the fire go out.

In the case of this page, it's a reminder that there's still work that needs to be done. Below is a list of charities and ways to help make the world a better place.

The World Community Grid
Most home computers spend a lot of their time doing nothing but waiting for the user to do something. The software from the WCG uses this time to productively help scientists work on cures for deadly diseases (West Nile and AIDS for example) or understand how proteins work. This is free; just sign up and install the software.

Ronald McDonald House
This charity provides a home away from home for families of hospitalized children. They also provide a room for the children to get away from the stress of the hospital. It is also possible to donate online.

Greater Good
Helping others has never been easier. Just click the button found on the sites listed under "good works" to aid that cause. Alternatively you can shop for various things with part of the price going to the cause of your choice.

Free Rice
This site is a vocabulary test with a twist: for each correct answer they will donate a portion of rice to fight hunger.
